Dell Rapids Trailway
Pride and appreciation of community is an important part of our school’s mission to promote responsible citizenship. Our citizens are very proud to live in a small town where natural wonders and beauty are part of a walk to the store or a talk with a neighbor. The Dell Rapids Trailway represents our local citizens at their best - as stewards of our natural environment and as models of our mission. Our students and staff are privileged to live in a community of vision and with leaders who model environmental appreciation for our small town.

Tucked between quartzite cliffs and the winding Big Sioux River, the proposed Dell Rapids Trailway holds hidden surprises around every bend - enjoy a breath-taking sunset or the solitary flight of a blue heron, glimpse a startled deer leaping into the underbrush, or perhaps discover the overgrown remains of an early settler’s home.
Available for year-round, non-motorized activities, the paved trail will feature several scenic bridges as it winds along the river from City Part to Rocky Run, the dam, and Veteran’s Park. Marked bicycle lanes along Old Highway 77 and 15th Street will take those wanting a lengthier ride to the eastern link of the trail that connects back to City Park, completing the 12-mile loop. Additional features are included to help youngsters travel safely to schools, parks, and ball diamonds.

The Trailway depends upon the success of federal grant and local matching funds. The committee already has nearly $200,000 in local commitments. Grants will cover 80% of the trail’s cost. Local citizens and businesses need to raise only 20% (approximately $800,000) to create this lasting legacy. Those contributing to the Dell Rapids Trailway will open up a world of natural wonders, healthy living, and treasured memories to generations of Dell Rapids area residents and our visitors!
